Metal storage cabinets are often heavy and cumbersome, but those old filing cabinets can be put to good use. By using them as part of a contemporary design strategy, you can refresh and transform those old metal cabinets into unique and innovative storage solutions.

For some cool DIY ideas with metal filing cabinets that you can make, read on.

paint it

You can instantly give your metal storage cabinets a fresh, updated look with metal or automotive paint. The appeal of car paint is that it is designed for use on metal and comes in a wide variety of colors.

You can liven it up with patterned or geometric patterns or simply choose a fresh, solid new color that matches your design strategy.

Before you start applying the paint, wash the cabinets with a mild soap and water mixture to remove any residue or grease that might prevent the paint from sticking to the metal.

Once the cabinet is dry, remove or cover the handles to avoid painting them. Now, you are ready to paint. Apply even coats in a downward motion, allowing the paint to dry between coats. Ideally, apply at least three coats for a professional, glossy finish.

Sewing or craft storage solution.

Who says a filing cabinet has to hold files? Use that storage space to keep your hobbies, crafts, or sewing supplies in one convenient place. Start by organizing your supplies into categories like notions, fabric scraps, accessories, and patterns.

Then label each drawer with a Polaroid photo or printed label indicating the contents. You can even paint your labels directly on the drawers using a stencil and metal paint.

vinyl record storage

Older filing cabinets generally had deep drawers that were at least 12 inches deep, if not more. And, since vinyl records (remember them?) are usually around 12 inches with their sleeve, they’ll fit right in.

The drawers will also protect your vinyl from outside debris, dust, and moisture. Although this is not an airtight solution, it is better than being stacked next to your turntable. Finish off your project by alphabetizing your collection and labeling each drawer.

To prevent drawer slides from breaking under weight stress, try to place no more than 30 logs in each drawer. You’ll also find that limiting the number of records in each of your metal storage cabinets will make your search easier, as you’ll have more room to flip through your selection.
