While many politicians have been caught having dual citizenship, the matter has been referred to the High Court of Australia for ruling. This is a contentious issue as those affected may not have the right to sit in parliament. It is uncomfortable for the government that has a one-seat majority and faces difficult times ahead. The Deputy Prime Minister is someone who is under a cloud.

The country is pretty tired of the back-and-forth slingshots that are messing up the business of running the country and we’re all hoping for a quick fix. As the matter will not be heard before October 10 at the earliest, the situation is quite dire for the nation.

At least one member of parliament has stated that his lawyer needs that time just to prepare his case. That’s a legitimate statement, as it’s probably the same with everyone who’s going to be tested.

The question we ask ourselves is: can these members of parliament and the Senate pass any legislation and what happens to it if it is found not to be legitimate? This is a strange situation as it has never happened before that I know of. With the large number of migrants in the country, it is possible that it will happen more frequently, so the court ruling will allow better measures to be taken to deal with future cases.

The government is anxious for an early solution so that it can continue running the country. If the court rules that those with dual citizenship cannot be in parliament, there will be by-elections on their seats. At the moment the polls favor the Labor Party and the chances of the Liberals losing the government are very high.
