Some people will try anything to lose weight quickly. Some try juice fasting for weight loss. But consider: is it safe? It is effective? How do you do it safely?

If you are going to try juice fasting for weight loss, it is best to contact your doctor. Every time you interfere with the way your body works, you take risks. Fasting can jumpstart an eating habit reprogramming program. A fast loaded with freshly squeezed vegetables and fruits will help supply the vital nutrients your body needs and keep your body electrolytes in better balance than a fast of water and a little lemon juice. Fresh juice that includes a variety of ingredients is the key. Keep veggies in a 3 part veg to 1 part fruit ratio (maybe 2 to 1, until you get used to the taste). Avoid some of the stronger flavors (garlic, ginger, and kale) at least initially. They can cause nausea.

Actually, fasting generally causes nausea and diarrhea. It can dangerously dehydrate your body (seems strange given you’re drinking a lot of fluids, but it’s documented). Unfortunately, despite the dangers of prolonged fasting, there is no strong evidence that this type of apparent weight loss has a long-term effect on body mass.

This is not to discourage a juice diet. There is a big difference between fasting and juicing to lose weight. Well, a fast is supposed to be quick. An effective diet is what you need to do every day for the rest of your life. Fresh, raw fruits and vegetables are a healthy addition to your diet and can reduce your weight.

Fruits and some vegetables are high in sugar. A juice diet works best for weight loss when the sugar is kept just right so the juice tastes good. That three-to-one ratio is the minimum to keep calories down. Drinking a refreshing mid-morning juice instead of a cream cheese-slathered bagel can fill your cravings and cut calories. This is good nutritional management.

Other parts of good driving are getting enough protein (maybe powders mixed with your juices, if you like), whole grain fiber, and some type of low calorie dairy / soy products to get the calcium. If you want, you can include plain yogurt or low-fat sour cream in your juices. You can even turn them into smoothies. (The best shakes are made with shaved ice. A Margaritaville frozen concoction machine combines a razor and a blender, but you can get the two devices separately.) Juicing for weight loss can be enjoyable, highly nutritious, and effective. If you are determined to improve your life and your shape, follow a juice diet, do not fast to lose weight. Your life will be healthier without risking serious complications.
