A few days ago I was reading in a magazine about living near my office, and the author described a place called sober living near me that allow children to have some of their friends. The living in this particular community was a little different than most. Many people that come here do so for a while, maybe a year or two and then move on to the next facility. Others have been here for decades, and have adopted a lifestyle here. Still others simply came to the area and found this particular environment conducive to them.
What struck me as interesting about this article was that it didn’t seem to be limited to elderly folks, or those who’d moved away from their families. It also mentioned families with children in tow. One man that I’d know personally actually moved away from his family many years back to get an advanced degree. However, he returned, and now spends his free time here living near me allowing children to visit him, and he’d go out of his way to take pictures with them, and even occasionally surprise them with his latest discovery.
When I first read that description of a place where you can have children living with you, I had to wonder how anyone could choose to live in such a place. In other words, how could they not see the benefits? Children are full of energy, and they love to play. They want to meet all kinds of new people, and do things that excite them.

If I’d had children staying with me, I could probably tell you that it has improved my life considerably. I’m a much happier person, and just enjoying the company of my family. In fact, I wouldn’t be able to wait until school was out, and then I could go out for ice cream, burgers, or whatever treats I enjoyed most. That kind of freedom is something I miss very badly. Living near by allows me that freedom.
When I lived on my own, I spent my time living close to other people, but it always felt like my social life was missing something. Living near by allows me to still enjoy meeting friends and having family members come to visit. I’m also close enough so that they can visit me when they have the time. That’s what living near means for me.
My kids think it’s great to live near by, and it certainly helps with their behavior problems. So for them, living near means having more activities, and it gives them a chance to learn to be more social around others. I really enjoy living near by.
