Local SEO

Local Search Engine Optimization is the strategy of optimizing for a certain keyword + city or zip code, like New York Pizza 02786, or Chicago South Italian Restaurant, etc.

With many businesses that deal with localized customers now realizing the potential for gaining local search customers, many have now sought out the techniques to get listed on Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. for such terms.

When you’re looking to rank for your keyword + city or zip code etc, the most important first step is to get a domain with your keyword and the area you want to rank for.

Let’s say you’re in Lisle, Chicago and you want more dry cleaning clients.

Lisle-drycleaning.com would be a perfect URL for such a goal. Once you get your domain, half your battle is won, because the search engines believe that your site will be exactly the same as your domain name. They assume you won’t have content on there about Orlando Ice cream or anything totally off-topic, so they weigh heavily on the domain name. Anyone can change content, but once you get your domain, that site is branded and search engines know it.

It would be easier to position yourself for lisle drycleaning on lisle-drycleaning.com than Chicago.com drycleaning with tons of content on the site about lisle drycleaning too…it’s the way they like to do it to business search engines.

Sure if you have lots of subpages with the right keyword density, tons of high ranking linked links about dry cleaning Scotland etc. you would rank. But why do more work for yourself? Get the right domain and set up your on-page SEO correctly and your local SEO goals will be set on a good footing.

An example of a local SEO practice is Orange, Tx pizza. What I got when I searched on Yahoo is:

pizzeria | Pizzeria in Orange, TX – PAGINASAMARILLAS.COM

Find pizza and pizzeria in Orange, TX. Read business reviews, find driving directions and more. pizza at PAGINASAMARILLAS.COM.

http://www.yellowpages.com/orange-tx/pizza

Did you notice that the keyword is in the subpage URL? Also notice that the local city and keyword are also mentioned in the page title.

This is the key if you want to get a local ranking.

Let’s recap:

1) choose a domain with your keyword and city or zip code

2) get your page title as your keyword and city

3) get local and keyword content on your site.

That’s a very solid start to getting a ranking for your keyword + city. There are other things you can do if you are in a more competitive niche, like building links and more content.

Just remember that SEO is an ever-evolving game and it takes time.

Good luck!
