These safaris are advantageous for families with very young children or perhaps pregnant women or anyone who is on medication and may not be able to take malaria pills.

Although today there is a half dose of the antimalarial Malarone (which my daughter takes frequently) for children that has no side effects, some parents would prefer not to go that route, and we have sometimes had clients who were pregnant and could not take antimalarial pills. malaria. This being the case, there are several places and areas that we can really recommend, where the game viewing is still sensational. For those adults who prefer to stay in a beautiful and luxurious ‘kid-free’ hostel, there are some excellent examples in South Africa, specifically in Madikwe, Marakelele and Welgevonden, as well as in the Waterberg Mountains. In Kenya, there are some beautiful and very decadent lodges, like Ol Donyo Lodge below, where your private villa is in a low malaria region, or in Laikipia, which is another low malaria area.

Malaria Free Safaris: Alternatively, for malaria-free family safaris, the Eastern Cape in South Africa often makes the most sense and there are some really beautiful lodges called Kwandwe, which we think are the best in this region. The guides are simply excellent, and the lodge has special backpacks for children, filled with everything your child needs to know about the bush. They make plaster casts of footprints or paw prints, often of a lion that they can take home, they learn all about the night sky and what trees and plants are used for the local people’s toothbrushes, toilet paper and medicinal properties . .

One can then move on to Plettenberg Bay which is close by for the beach part of your holiday and again there is so much to do in this region it would be impossible to dream of being bored! It offers everything from canopy and zip line tours, bungee jumping, polo, horseback riding, elephant rides, visits to an animal hospital and orphanage, the beach, tubing, sailing, parasailing, Bird World, which is a huge aviary containing a wonderful display of exotic and indigenous birds – and Monkeyland.

Malaria Free Safaris: Another country that has low malaria areas is Kenya, in the Chyulu Hills as well as in Laikipia, where children can go on a camel safari, stay in a tree house, learn to track wild dogs and other animals, sleep outside ( a camping experience), plus swimming in waterfalls, clay pigeon shooting, archery, horse riding, fishing – the list is endless! Family safaris in Kenya tend to be fun and adventurous!

Either way, it is possible to organize the most wonderful, indulgent or fun safaris in this region, as I myself come from both countries and know them extraordinarily well.
