Remember, you are applying to business school, not medical school, not law school, not architecture school, we are talking business here and you should treat your MBA application in a business manner.

Even if you don’t have a business background, you’ll need to learn how to approach a business school application if you really want to get their attention. By your, I mean you readers, the admissions officers at these schools.

First things first, your business school application is a sales document, a sales pitch. Depending on how consistent and persuasive you are about your career goals and your desire to go to business school, you really need to picture yourself as a unique product on the market. Your MBA application will determine how much your clients (in this case, business schools) will like you.

You need to know 2 things up front as you ponder about positioning yourself as a product. Let’s say you’re a nicely wrapped gift box with a cute bow on top (just kidding!). You understand my essence.

1) What type of applicant do you WANT to accept?

2) How to ‘package’ yourself with an AWESOME story to make you a perfect cast

Although you can acquire some of this information online, you really need to go further to find the secrets. This usually means you need to visit schools, talk to current students, alumni, and others so you can get a better idea of what kind of applicants they’re looking for. Trust me, not all business schools are looking for the same thing. I can guarantee you that!

Once you can accept the fact that you need to imagine yourself as a product and that the business school is your customer, you need to understand three more things to jumpstart your approach to the MBA application process.

Let’s review them:

A) I know many of you have career visions. This is great! But you need to have a great career vision that you are in love with and that you know will make you achieve AMAZING things and affect those around you in an extremely positive way. THINK BIG!

B) Ok, this one is easy. They are looking for intellect. Show them that you know what you’re doing. They don’t just want a great GRE and/or GMAT score, they want a good GPA and for you to have THE CAREER CHARACTERISTICS to make your career vision a reality. I put a lot of emphasis on professional traits because you need to understand them if you don’t already know them.

C) Last but not least, be SUPER CONSISTENT throughout your ENTIRE application. You must emphasize your CAREER HISTORY and VISION in each part of your application with specific details. Generic stuff isn’t going to cut it. In my opinion, the best places to emphasize these two things are in your essays and letters of recommendation.

You have a lot of work to do, but keep your chin up! You are going to do GREAT!
