SugarCane is one of the Toyo Enterprises brands. Other Toyo Enterprises brands – Sun Surf, Buzz Ricksons, John Seyerson, Tailor Toyo, StyleEyes, Indian Motorcycle and Whitesville also make vintage Japanese-American denim. The history of the brand began in 1977. In the 1980s, the brand started producing repro together with other companies such as Evisu, SDA and Denime. However, SugarCane takes issue with repro denim makers who call their production dungarees. The custom jean models manufactured by SugarCane can be divided into two directions: standard denim produced in the US and original from Japan.

Standard denim jeans are made from a cotton blend: 60% American cotton and 40% Zimbabwean cotton. The denim color is also a standard rope dye. All sewing patterns and back pockets are also handmade and therefore exclusive. In 2006 a jubilee model of jeans was produced. The Union Star jeans are a reproduction of 501 Levi’s, however, they have specific decorative elements: a pentangle, a SugarCane trademark, a label at the bottom of the back pocket, hidden rivets instead of X-stitching, a patch of leather instead of pressed paper.

The Made in USA series represents jeans made in the USA from Japanese denim, with American furnishings and sold in Japan. These jeans models stand out for the use of the gripper zipper manufactured by Scovill. Such zippers were used on older Levi’s models and are no longer manufactured. The jeans are sold in a paper box along with a newspaper dated 1955. The series also includes reproduction models with arches, studs, flat buttons, hidden rivets, centered belt loop, donut buttons, X-studs, left twill and leg. spin – amazing attention to detail. However, any Japanese reproduction manufacturer can find standard models of American jeans. The distinguishing feature of the SugarCane brand is its own line of products.

It’s called Japan Original and includes the brand’s most famous custom denim models. The jeans are dyed in the original indigo color and have a green hue that becomes brighter after wearing for a while. Cotton fibers for the manufacture of jeans are enriched with sugar cane fibers. Sugarcane is grown on the islands of Okinawa; that’s why one of the most popular models in the line is called Okinawa. Another model is called Hawaii, from there sugar cane was also imported for the manufacture of jeans. Sugar cane fibers create a rougher denim structure and give the jeans a sweet scent. Also, these jeans are considered environmentally friendly. The Edo Ai model is colored with natural indigo with the use of special bacteria. The lining of the pockets and the packaging of the jeans are decorated with prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, making SugarCane’s tailored jeans a true masterpiece. The pocket lining of the Hawaiian jean looks like sacks of rice, and the pocket lining of the Okinawa jean is decorated with an embroidered sashiko pattern. It could be said that the jeans made by Sugarcane are the most personalized Japanese jeans. A patch with a turtle, a green selvedge and a green label are distinctive features of the series.

However, the fit of the jeans leaves a lot to be desired: SugarCane is not a fashion brand. The denim for the SC 40600 jeans is handmade, as is all the embroidery, vintage woodcut on the pockets, and brass buttons. The SC 40601 custom jean is a 13-ounce slack denim that has a rough, solid construction and mimics house-spun denim. The SC 40500 jean model has a tattoo-style design on the pocket lining and original jean packaging, as well as a standard jean fit. The Japan Original Line product range also includes variants of custom jean models in other colors. Only natural colors are used: green tea, earth, khaki and hay.

The SugarCane brand also makes denim shirts and jackets, as well as special soap for washing sugarcane jeans. Sugarcane fibers are rich in amino acids, which have antibacterial, antistatic, moisturizing and other beneficial effects, so bleaches, enzymes and phosphates can be harmful to them.
