Acne is an inflammatory skin condition caused by clogging of hair follicles with oil and dead cells, often leading to bacterial invasion.

Acne evolves in stages with initial whiteheads/blackheads that later develop into pustules/papules and finally into severe forms like scars and cystic nodules.

Therefore, early detection and prompt treatment of acne is strongly recommended to stop the progression. They appear as multiple pimple like painful red bumps or lumps on the face or anywhere on the body like neck, back and shoulder.

This can be quite distressing for cosmetic reasons for adolescents and some adults, especially when acne breaks out on the face.

CAUSES OF ACNE

The main causes are:

• Excessive production of sebum (skin oil).

• Excess androgens.

• Bacterial invasion of the skin.

• Clogging of hair follicles with sebum

ACNE CARE AND HOME REMEDIES

• Wash the affected areas twice a day and gently.

• Avoid rubbing affected areas when bathing.

• Avoid the use of oily creams.

• Avoid cleaners with gritty content.

• Reduce the intake of chocolates and skimmed milk.

• Do not squeeze or use your hands to remove acne to avoid scar formation.

• Do not use astringents that dry out the skin.

• Avoid prolonged intake of corticosteroids.

Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a day keeps the skin hydrated and free of toxins.

Regular daily exercise keeps the skin pores open due to sweating and reduces the risk of acne.

ACNE TREATMENT

Most acne generally responds to topical therapy, although a combination of oral and topical therapy is most effective. The success of the treatment lies in using a product that follows these treatment principles:

• Inhibition of sebum production

• Limitation of bacterial growth

• Promotion of cell detachment to unclog skin pores.

4 MAIN FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN ACNE

PRODUCT

• Natural products, eg herbal supplements, are more tolerable because they do not have side effects unlike orthodox acne creams.

• Choose a product that has a cream and capsule complement to attack acne internally and externally.

• Choose a product that removes all forms of blackheads/whiteheads

• Choose a product that contains rich antioxidants like vitamin C, E and aloe vera to protect your skin from bacterial invasion.

NB- Avoid buying over-the-counter acne creams due to the risk of allergic reactions and serious irritation.

Finally, adhering to the above acne care guidelines and choosing the right product will significantly prevent recurrence of acne and breakouts.
