It is no secret that images convert better than text. Words are most evocative when they evoke images in the mind’s eye, but Internet users have notoriously short attention spans. You can’t count on them taking the time to read an evocative copy. The images, therefore, should serve as a lure that excites the potential customer with what you have to say.

Unfortunately, the most popular social networks have very different requirements when it comes to uploading images. You will always have to verify the height and width of your images before publishing them, but with this guide, you will at least know what the optimal resolutions are for each network.

Keep this in mind though: you should always shoot your images in the highest resolution possible. Social media will automatically shrink your images, so if you start with a low-resolution font, the end result will look even worse.

Facebook

The Facebook cover photo is what attracts the most attention, so it is absolutely recommended that it looks good. The image must be at least 851 × 315 pixels. Profile photos must be at least 180 × 180, although Facebook will automatically reduce them to 160 × 160.

Link images are best at 1200×627, and Facebook will shrink them to 403×210 on PC and 560×292 on mobile devices. Post images, meanwhile, must be at least 1200 × 1200, and will be displayed at 403 × 403 on PC and 560 × 560 on mobile devices. Facebook accepts JPEG, BMP, PNG, TIFF, and PNG formats.

Twitter

Twitter supports images as long as they are hosted on pic.twitter.com and displayed online. Your Twitter profile picture should be 400 × 400 and your cover image should be 1500 × 500. Keep the post images at 880 × 440 (a 2: 1 aspect ratio) and note that these Images cannot exceed 3MB or 1040 × 512.

Twitter supports the following formats: JPEG, PNG, and GIF. Keep in mind that the GIF format supports animation, which is a great way to grab the attention of your followers. Animated GIFs are a series of individual photos in sequence that repeat endlessly.

Google+

Google+ now has more than 1.5 billion users and the network has more than 200 million mobile users. Although it is still less popular than Facebook, there is no doubt that Google is doing everything it can to boost its network. Here’s how to post images.

Your profile photo should be 250 × 250 and will be displayed as a circle. This means that automatic cropping will occur, so make sure the person’s face is centered in the image. Post images should have a 1: 1 aspect ratio and the optimal size is 620 × 620.

Your cover photo should be 1080 × 608. You will want to crop 140px on either side because many mobile devices don’t display these pixels anyway. Like Twitter, you can use animated GIFs on Google+.

LinkedIn

The no-introduction network for professionals, LinkedIn isn’t exactly photo-friendly. Infographics and other long images are cut off, so if you plan to post them, consider cropping them to create a trailer. Your LinkedIn company logo should be 100 × 60 in size, while your profile picture can be 200 × 200.

Your cover photo should be 646 × 220, while your link posts can be any size, but they will be reduced to a stingy size of 180 × 110. Your background post can be as large as 1400 × 425, but Please note that this is a premium feature.

Pinterest

Pinterest, the playground of images, can be a constant source of traffic for companies with products that appeal to their largely female user base. Note that the “pins” on Pinterest are previews. When a user clicks on them, a larger version of the image appears.

The pins must be at least 736 pixels wide and the height will be automatically scaled. Your profile photo must be at least 600 × 600 pixels. Please note that your board cover image will display at 216×146 and will be reduced by the size of the pin you decide to present. Similarly, the pin cover images are reduced to 236px in the same way.
