I recently read a children’s book on pediatric cancer called Where’s My Hair? The author is Patti Block. She is from the state of Minnesota, which is in the US. Illustrator is Swapan Debnath.

This is a very moving story about two childhood friends with one dealing with the life of pediatric cancer and their cancer treatments. The book is a great social story for those who need a few words of encouragement or to start a conversation.

Although the author wrote this book when her sister-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer, Where’s My Hair? talks about cancer as a general term. Any family facing any type of cancer could use this social story as a resource to help a family through difficult times. Not just the initial hard times, but also the hard times during chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.

Many times children’s books are not age-appropriate reading. Where is my hair? It is a book that is easy to read, very age appropriate. The words are written simply so that it is easy for the young child to understand.

The images in this book are so colorful. They are so realistic. The details of each image are obvious. You can see the emotions on the faces of each character. Whether it’s pain, sadness, or worry, the emotions are there for the reader to relate to; possibly starting a discussion about how the child feels.

This true-to-life event book would make a great addition to any personal, professional, or public library.
