About Maldives

There are around 1200 small islands found in the Indian Ocean, they are also called the pearls of the Indian Ocean. The closest countries to the Maldives are India and Sri Lanka.

There are approximately 1,200 separate islands in the Maldives and only about one sixth of them are populated. The Maldives is the smallest nation in Asia in terms of population and the smallest Muslim country in the world. The capital of the Maldives is Male, which is a densely populated island. While the rest of the islands are sparsely populated. Of the 200 islands, 40 islands are completely turned into resorts for tourists.

Brief history of Maldives

Although there are no certain facts, it is estimated that the Maldives were populated around 1500 BC. C., explorers from India and Sri Lanka could have reached the archipelago. During 1152 there was introduction of Islam; there was a brief period from 1558 to 1573 when the Portuguese took over the Maldives. There was a period when the island was occupied by the British. Finally, the Maldives gained independence in 1965.

Flora and Fauna in the Maldives

Despite the lush green palm trees as such, there are no other trees that grow perfectly on the island. Probably because the soil does not support vegetation, most of the trees are coconut palms, vines, banyan trees, and mangroves. There are also breadfruit trees and bamboos. Flowering plants include Frangipani. and bougainvillea.

While there is a healthy variety of island-dwelling birds, there are fewer varieties of land animals. Common to the islands are flying foxes, geckos, and garden lizards. There are also a couple of snake species (not dangerous).

The Maldives are a bird watcher’s paradise! There are over 100 species of birds – expect to see crows, parakeets and mergansers, as well as koel birds. Herons, seagulls and firebrands are also present.

Maldives is a popular seaside resort and all kinds of islands are suitable for all kinds of tourists. There is something for everyone. For the adventurous travelers there are diving facilities, as the sea is rich with marine life that can be explored. So as for laid back people, you can sit back and enjoy nature.
