The best way to explore Singapore is to do what the locals do. That’s right, do things that are not touristy. I’ve compiled a list of places and things to do in Singapore that are mostly free, plus a bottle of drink and transportation fees. I hope you find them useful and have fun!

1. Grab your 20 megapixel camera and head to Chinatown… okay okay, 2 million pixels is just as good. Take some photos of the old shops and their almost 90-degree stairs. If you like to take photos of older people, there are many sitting in the wet market doing nothing.

2. Go to the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve to ride a mountain bike or walk and smell the green. Bring a bottle of water and shades.

3. Take a ferry (it’s only $2) to Pulau Ubin and explore the island. You can also rent a worn bike or scooter. Try to take a taxi if you can find one, they can climb rough terrain better than jeeps. Explore some of the Malay camps and prawn farms.

4. Visit Changi Prison. It is free admission for both tourists and inmates. Stop by the museum and chapel for World War II history and photos.

5. Visit the Siang Lim Si temple in Toa Payoh. Look how they hurt people. For non-believers, you can count the number of deities inside…it should take you an hour.

6. Go to East Coast Park for a swim and follow satay-bee hoon into the hawker center.

7. Take a train to Changi Airport. Buy two cups of coffee, find a comfortable prop in the departure lounge observation deck, watch the planes take off, and wonder why you’re not on the plane for a vacation.

8. Grab a map and walk around MacRitchie Reservoir.

9. Go to Sim Lim Square and check out the latest laptops and hardware.

10. Go for a run from the Kallang River to the Benjamin Sheares Bridge.

11. Take a train from Tanjong Pagar train station. You can go to Malaysia and back in one day.

12. Try water skiing in Pungol.

13. Make your own kite and fly it in the open field of Marine South. After that, you can enjoy a delicious steamboat dinner at the many nearby steamboat restaurants.

14. Go to the flea market on Sungei Road. Some people called it the Thieves’ Market because most of the things that are sold there are not bought by merchants.

15. Go cycling to Sembawang Park. Quiet and pleasant even on weekends. Pedal to the end and you can see some of the big ships refueling.

16. Bring your own pit and barbecue along the Upper Pierce Reservoir. But if you feel oily, don’t jump into the reservoir, you may end up in Point no. Four.

17. Visit the Tekka Market on Serangoon Road for a variety of fruits and vegetables. There’s a stall selling some of the best Bryani chicken rice I’ve ever tasted.

18. Go fishing at Pasir Ris Park.

19. Visit Kinokuniya Bookstore If you feel dizzy after browsing the library-sized bookstore, sit down for a cup of tea at the cafe inside the bookstore. If you’re feeling like a bookworm that day, head to Borders Bookstore for a second helping.

20. Visit Sungei Buloh Nature Park. Bring binoculars and watch birds. After that, you can buy some hydroponic vegetables at home from nearby farms.
