I was looking for used motorhomes online earlier this year and started to get overwhelmed with the options. Used caravans come in all sizes and many serve different purposes. It has teardrop, trip, popup, fifth wheel and so on. For my family, a used pop-up RV was our top pick and here are a few reasons why.

First of all, a big benefit of buying a used camper is the price. Specifically, a used pop-up camper will be your most cost-effective option and you can get the most out of your investment. I went to several dealers who specialized in new and used motorhomes and was surprised at the price difference. I was looking for a pop up with air conditioning, refrigerator, water heater, water pump, toilet and shower. New, I was looking at a minimum of $9,000 for the baseline. Somewhat shocked by the stickers, I spent the next few afternoons on Craigslist. Within 5 days I found a 1998 Coleman in mint condition that was garage maintained and had everything I wanted but was over half the price I found at the dealer.

The pop-up is also very lightweight and can be easily towed by most pickup trucks, pickup trucks, and SUVs. I towed my Coleman with a 2007 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado and didn’t notice a huge difference in gas mileage. I average 17 mpg loaded, 19 unloaded.

Aside from cost, size, and features, the pop-up camper is ideal for a family of four. The family sleeps comfortably in the two fold outs. I personally have two little girls and they love the space next to them. Personally the only recommendation I have is to buy some egg crate foam for the adults sleeping in the camper. Most used caravans come with the standard caravan mattress. This can become uncomfortable as the night wears on, especially if you are over 180 pounds.

In addition to spacious sleeping folds, most pop-up campers have a dinette, three-way refrigerator, storage areas under bench seating, and a cooking area. It’s a big plus if you can find a used RV that has a full kitchen area that has a sink with hot water, a four-burner stove, and ample storage space. Again, if you are looking for used campervans to save some money, you would benefit greatly from buying one with a cassette toilet and shower. First of all, both are useful for an emergency, if the place you are camping at does not offer facilities or if the facilities are unpleasant. Second, used RVs hold their resale value better than RVs that don’t have extra features.

The last great feature of the popup is its ease of configuration. Pop-ups are easy to set up and most can be taken fully packed to sleep ready in 15 to 20 minutes.

Most used campervans have a lot of life in them, so if you’re in the market, check out the pop-up camper.
