These days, you don’t have to look far to find hordes of gurus ready to help you answer the question: What is the Law of Attraction?

Arguably one of the most famous of these people is Rhonda Byrne. Her best-selling book and movie, The Secret, is currently the de facto standard in all things metaphysical. Although she attributes her inspiration to centuries-old New Thought writers like Wallace D. Wattles, it was actually Plato who may have first answered the question, “What is the Law of Attraction?”

If he were still alive today, his answer would be simply: “likes attract.” This great philosopher, of course, was talking about the “first law of affinity” of himself and the science of chemistry. However, starting in the middle of the 20th century, scientists began to apply this law to us, the common people.

So, in today’s lingo, this translates to “we become what we think about.” Self-help legend Earl Nightingale coined this phrase in the 1950s.

Does this mean that if you repeat some Law of Attraction affirmations, fame, money and wealth are yours for the taking? Oh, if only life were that simple! Affirmations can act as a springboard to train your mind to think more positively, but you still have to work hard at this.

Consider this: If your thoughts are constantly focused on “wanting” or “getting” something, then what you’re really focusing on is your “lack” of something, and therefore attracting more of those negative things into your life. . It took me a while to really understand how deep this is!

Training your mind to focus on positive thoughts and truly believe in your own worth is central to the Law of Attraction. When you are able to understand this concept, the door to abundance will open wide!

If you had the opportunity to sit down with Plato and ask him “What is the Law of Attraction?” his answer might go something like this:

“Believe in yourself! You are a truly magnificent and helpful person! When you leave the cycle of negative thinking, prosperity will come.”

Now get to work!
